What we do

What automatic transmission repair includes

The scope of work depends on the fault and on the type of gearbox. We always start with diagnostics, so that nothing that works is replaced.

Transmission diagnostics

We read the fault codes of the transmission control unit and check the adaptations and how the gearbox works. If the fault is linked to the engine or the electrics, we run computer diagnostics of the whole car.

Transmission oil change

We change the oil in the automatic gearbox. Fresh oil reduces wear and extends the life of the gearbox.

Repair and rebuild

We remove and dismantle the gearbox, find the worn and damaged parts, repair it and put it back together. The work is agreed after the inspection for defects.

Transmission removal and replacement

If a repair is not worthwhile, we remove the gearbox and fit another one. We make the decision together with you based on the diagnostics.

Gearbox types

Which automatic transmissions we repair

We work on the automatic gearboxes of cars and minibuses of all makes.

Conventional automatic

A hydraulic automatic transmission with a torque converter. The most common type of automatic gearbox.

DSG and automated gearboxes

Dual-clutch gearboxes (DSG) and automated manual gearboxes.

CVT

A continuously variable transmission: the ratio changes smoothly, without separate gears.

Warning signs

When an automatic transmission needs repair

Book a diagnostic check if you notice any of the signs below. The sooner the cause is found, the better the chance of avoiding an expensive repair.

Jerks and jolts when changing gear. The gearbox shifts harshly, with a jolt or with a delay.

Slipping. The engine revs rise, but the car barely accelerates.

Delay when selecting D or R. After you move the selector, the car does not move off straight away.

Limp mode. The gearbox is stuck in one gear and a warning light is on.

Noise, humming or vibration. Unusual sounds appear when driving or at idle. With a DSG — vibration when pulling away.

Oil leaks. There are oil marks under the car and the gearbox oil level drops.

Good to know

Oil decides how long an automatic transmission lasts

The oil in an automatic gearbox does more than lubricate: it transmits force and drives the gearbox hydraulics. Over time heat ages it, and wear particles build up in it.

Many manufacturers call the gearbox oil a lifetime fill. In city driving, when towing a trailer and in frequent traffic jams the gearbox works under heavy load, and old oil speeds up its wear. That is why we recommend:

  • changing the oil on the manufacturer’s schedule for severe operating conditions;
  • not putting off the change if the oil has darkened or smells burnt;
  • starting with diagnostics, not an oil change, when the gearbox jerks or slips.

When you should not keep driving

Stop in a safe place if:

  • the gearbox no longer engages gears;
  • you smell burnt oil;
  • the car does not move although a gear is engaged.

If the gearbox has gone into limp mode but the car still drives, you can carefully drive to the workshop. Do not drive like this for long.

How we work

How automatic transmission repair works

First we find out what is happening with the gearbox, then we agree the repair with you.

Diagnostics

We clarify the symptoms, read the fault codes and check the oil level and condition and how the gearbox works.

Estimate

We explain what we found and agree the scope of work and the cost with you.

Repair

We change the oil, repair the gearbox or fit another one — depending on the fault.

Check

After the repair we check how the gearbox works and that there are no fault codes.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about automatic transmission repair

How much does automatic transmission repair cost?

Work is charged at an hourly rate, and current prices are on the Prices page. The final cost depends on the fault and the type of gearbox, so we agree the estimate after the diagnostics.

Does the oil in an automatic gearbox need changing?

Yes, especially in city driving, when towing a trailer and in traffic jams. Even if the manufacturer calls it a lifetime fill, fresh oil reduces gearbox wear.

Do you repair DSG gearboxes and CVTs?

Yes. We work on conventional automatics, DSG and other automated gearboxes, and CVTs.

Can I drive if the gearbox jerks?

Only briefly and carefully — just to get to the workshop. Jerks and slipping speed up wear, and a small fault can turn into a major overhaul.

Which is better: repair or a replacement gearbox?

It depends on the fault and the condition of the gearbox. After the diagnostics we explain the options and choose the solution together with you.

Which cars do you work on?

Cars and minibuses of all makes. Our main focus is Citroën, Peugeot, Renault, Dacia, Ford and Volvo.

Do you also repair manual gearboxes?

Yes, manual gearbox repair is a separate service: we find and fix wear in the synchronisers, gears, gear shift mechanism and differential, and replace worn oil seals.

How do I book an automatic transmission repair?

Fill in the form on this page or call +372 5552 7985. Give your registration number or VIN and describe how the gearbox behaves.
