Kia’s story began in Seoul in May 1944, when Kyungsung Precision Industry made steel tubing and bicycle parts. In 1951 it presented the Samchuly, the first bicycle made in Korea; it assembled motorcycles from 1957 and lorries from 1962, and in 1974 built its first passenger car, the Brisa. The name Kia is formed from two Chinese characters and means “rising from Asia”. Since 1998 Kia has been part of the Hyundai Motor Group. In 2006 Peter Schreyer, the designer of the “Tiger Nose” grille, became the brand’s chief designer, and the same year the plant in Žilina, Slovakia, started building the Ceed, a model designed in Frankfurt for European roads. In 2021 the company took the name Kia Corporation and a new logo, and the electric EV6 was named European Car of the Year 2022, making Kia the first Korean brand to win the award.
